Golden Gardens Park

Critical Mass ride ended at Golden Gardens Park. The weather was fantastic and there were easily 600 riders.

Port of Seattle

A gorgeous evening in the Port of Seattle. This shot was taken from SW Spokane looking North toward the cityscape. I think it's a pretty encompassing shot of "Seattle-Nature."

The cat that lives in the apartment. I asked around, and I'm not sure it actually belongs to anyone that lives here.

Great Day on Lake Union

The weather was absolutely brilliant today. Wish there were more days like this; although it would likely triple the population here. Great game of capture the flag going on in the background. How come we don't play freeze tag anymore?

Japanese Garden

Went to the Japanese Garden tonight, and didn't have the $5 to get in... So I walked a trail around the perimeter and still got a good glimpse at the garden. Looks worth the price of admission.

Kite Shop

In Wallingford, just north of Lake Union on Stone Way North is a shop called Gas Works Kite Shop. The two women working the shop are high-energy, extremely knowledgeable of their products, and happy to help. The shop sells kites from $4 to $100, and also carries a wide variety of fun new and older-designed toys. Looking to play and need a new, and relatively inexpensive, toy? Check out this shop.

Ride in Silence, Part II

Another pic from the Ride in Silence. Despite the gray skies, weather stayed pretty warm. Even had a couple of hand-cyclists out for the ride. Can't wait for Critical Mass next Friday.

Ride in Silence, Part II

Today was the Ride in Silence. In Seattle, it was performed by about 80 cyclists (by my personal estimate), and went in a 10-mile loop around Lake Union. The ride was cheered on by quite a few folks, occasionally joined by commuters downtown, and given a thanks by at least one teary bystander.

Sunny in Seattle

Winter is finally waning and we are starting to get more and more sunny days around here. Can't wait till the water warms up for some swimming and playing in the lakes. This shot is at the corner of 5th Avenue and South Weller Street.

A shot from the window of my new room. This is looking North-West toward the Sound from South Seattle. To the left of the viewable space of this photo I also get a nice view of two large stadiums and SoDo.

Bridgestone Day

I ride an old school bike of considerable quality and cult following: a Bridgestone RB-2. I love the Bridgestone bikes made in the USA during the 80s and 90s and have a few in my collection. They have quite a cult following among Bridgestone lovers, but still I rarely see them out and about. Today, coming out of the REI flagship store, my bike was accompanied in the rack by an RB-1 and an MB-4. Pretty cool.

Climbing Indoors

I went to REI's flagship store downtown today. This place is huge. And to top it off, they have a rock climbing wall indoors inside of the store. Pretty cool, but this made me stop and consider the paradox of the place: Seattle weather creates some need for synthetic indoor exercise, while being a place in easy reach and access to so many great opportunities for real outdoor activity.

There's a Hare in My Graffiti...

In West Seattle, off of California Ave there is a coffee shop called Freshy's across the street from the public school and community center. On the concrete retaining wall that holds the school yard in was this peculiar little piece of graffiti art.

Gray Days

They say all manner of statistics to talk about how much it rains in Seattle. The fact is, it doesn't rain as much as any of those stats say; here below the convergence zone there are just a lot of "gray days." This photo is shot facing South down W Marginal Way SW toward Mt. Ranier on the lower West Seattle bridge.

Redroom, Redroom

On the fourth floor of the downtown public library is the conference center. It is curiously painted red: floors, walls, ceilings, and all. Kind of feels like you're in a scene from Kubrik's Space Oddyssey.

The Downtown Library

The downtown public library is an odd lookingstructure thanks to these juxtaposed walls of steel and glass. This shot was taken from the 9th floor at the top of the atrium.

A cold front has moved in and cause the rain to mix with some snow. Not great fun for the bicycle rider.

Mt. Hood.

Driving back from Prineville, I passed through the Mt. Hood ski region (through Government Camp). This particular place is the Upper Snow Park. The lifts were running and there were plenty of folks out skiing.

Just around the corner from Prineville is the Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon. How can you resist a stout on the nitro tap?

Road trip.

This weekend calls for a road trip. Destination: Prineville, Oregon. By way of Portland. This shot is the Moon just prior to reaching Warm Springs, and just aways after coming out of Mt. Hood National Forest. What's in Prineville? Stay tuned.

Cloudshine.

An amazing day in Seattle today. The dark clouds are looming in the background, but its all sunshine for this gorgeous young woman standing on the tiered fountain beneath the blossoming trees and across the street from the Seattle Art Museum.

Monday, March 17, 2008

Sunset on the Bay.

A beautiful sunset tonight downtown around Pier 52. It's nice to find a bit of evening sunshine in the City. Although the air was a bit chilly, folks were out on the docks taking it all in. Traffic was light in the Port, but I wonder why I never hear the ships blowing horn alerts as they come in.

Tapas in Boulder.

I'm in Boulder, CO, this evening at a restaurant downtown called The Mediterranean. It's a tapas styles restaurant where they serve small plates of high quality food. The picture here, is starring a bacon-wrapped date in an amazing sauce. I don't recall the name of the sauce, but it was some kind of deliciousness for sure.

Under the Bridge.

Found it! Just over the Aurora Bridge, you find a pedestrian underpass. This makes the troll really more accessible by foot/bike than by car for sure. Down the stairs and you run right into the thing. I was hoping that a piece like this wouldn't be subjected to local graffiti, but everybody in Fremont that owns a box of crayons and a set of fingerpaints thinks they're an artist. Unfortunately, somebody felt they could improve upon the troll by using colored chalk to paint its eyes and fingernails. I don't know, should art be a privilege?

Sunday, February 24, 2008

Across Lake Union.

Today I decided to go hunt down the Troll under the Aurora Bridge in Fremont. This shot was taken on the bridge. It was a gorgeous day and with just a bit of wind, the sailboats were out. You can see the mountain range faded out in the background.
